Given coffee's power to boost alertness, this should be a benefit to the workplace. Except there's ample research evidence of increasingly poor performance among young doctors who are forced to be on call for long periods of time. If people are not getting enough sleep or their natural sleep patterns are being disrupted, taking a sleeping pill may actually make the problem worse.
