Smoke and drink more if you want to have ED

Drinking at the bar with friends until the early morning, all up in cigarette smoke and hooking up with a beautiful lady for some dirty fun at your place as an after party - this is definitely one of the most common images men have in their mind when spending their time drinking and smoking out in the city. There's no sense in partying without a lot of liquor and a good cigarette to get things going, at least that's what the majority of men think of when asked about a good party. And despite the fact that smoking is not that fad anymore, still, the image of a smoking man at the bar drinking whiskey is buried by the movie industry too deep in our minds.

Still, while you're making the party cooler with a lot of booze and smokes, getting a good sex after it can become quite problematic. It's a well-established fact that liquor and sex don't get along very well. It's either one or the other. Of course, having a glass of wine can be inspiring and beneficial for intimacy, but it gets very ugly when you're seriously drunk and trying to make your little partner get up and work after a whole night of heavy partying. Sure, most young men have the health to drink a lot and then get wild in bed, but sooner or later this party will end and heavy drinking will eventually lead to impotence even when being sober.

Smoking is not any better for good sex. While not affecting the erectile function directly, smoking delivers very harmful effects to lungs and blood vessels, decreasing the overall ability for physical activity. Your penis will still be hard and ready for action, but it will be you who will be wheezing after a couple of minutes of sex. And even drugs like Levitra won't do much good, because they won't replace your lungs for good sex. Not to mention the fact that smoking has a very negative impact on conception abilities in both in women and men.

Sure, it looks very cool to smoke a cigarette after a good time spent in bed. However, the romantic image is devastated by the fact that about 40% of male smokers are reported to have different forms of erectile dysfunction. And the risk is particularly high for men in their middle ages, with about 50% increase of impotence risk associated with smoking in this demographical group. This means that those who would have perfect erections in their 40's are sacrificing their abilities to smoking, and choose to pop Levitra and Viagra instead. Sounds quite pessimistic, don't you agree?

So when you get out with the boys next time, bear these simple facts in mind. Sure, everyone needs some time to get out and have fun, there's no problem with that. But keep in mind that heavy drinking and smoking can echo up when you get older, and there won't be any chance to get back the health you once had and wasted on booze and smokes.

Getting the most out of your acne treatment

Acne is a common skin problem that many teenagers and young adults struggle with. In large part this problem is thought to be caused by the hormonal imbalance characteristic for this age. The inflammatory processes connected with acne formation are linked to the hair follicles and oil glands found in the skin. The problems start to occur in areas where the production of oil is increased and where the pores become blocked. Another part of the issue is the increased shedding rates of the skin, which may fuel the formation of acne and associated inflammatory process.

Basics of acne treatment

In general, and effective acne treatment is comprised of oil gland activity control, regulation of hormonal balance and external treatment of the symptoms. However, the main efforts should be put into resolving the internal causes behind acne in order to minimize any external side effects (acne scars, inflammation, etc.) And the main rule is that the treatment should be individual, and if something works for your friend it doesn't necessarily mean that it will work for you too.

Your skin has a delicate balance of substances, and all the treatments you may use should be unique to your skin as well. There are different types of skin, and all skin care products have different classification according to the type of skin you have. It's a big mistake to purchase a cr?me for oily skin if you have dry type of skin. This applies to acne treatment as well. It's a skin problem and you have to do everything to restore your skin's normal balance. Even by simply using products that are designed for your skin type you will certainly observe positive results.

Choices for treating acne

It all depends on the type and severity of acne that you have. Mild types of acne can be eliminated by external treatments and simple lifestyle changes (diet, vitamins, etc.). More severe forms of acne will require you to take internal treatments as well, in order to eliminate the factors causing acne.

First of all, you should use exfoliation on your skin to minimize the risk of developing acne. Exfoliation involves periodical removal of dead skin layers that otherwise become the building material for acne formation. If you have increased shedding rates, your dead skin cells clog the pores and feed the bacteria inside, which leads to inflammation associated with acne. When you remove this dead skin, you eliminate one of the causes for acne formation and prevent acne breakouts. There are numerous products for this procedure, so it is better to consult with your dermatologist first.

You should also improve your skin care by moisturizing and cleansing it on a regular basis. The skin affected by acne is usually very sensitive, so using a moisturizing and cleansing products is very beneficial. However, try to not overuse these solutions as you may damage the skin with too frequent use.

If you have very serious and severe acne problems, the last resort will be Accutane. This product is regarded as the most effective acne treatment as it helps in cases when other solutions have failed. Accutane works by regulating the functioning of oil glands in the skin, and should only be used under a doctor's supervision in order to assure the safety of this drug's use.

Painkillers for the relief of pain

Look around. Despite what hunters and fishermen might tell you so you feel better about eating what they catch, every bird, animal and fish reacts to injury in a way suggesting they feel pain. You can see them flinch when wounded. It's that same unpleasant sensation we get when the skin is cut, bones are broken or we catch an infection. We grab hold of the damaged bit of our body and "know" we have to do something about it. So pain is a message. The nerves in the affected part of the body react to the injury and send an electrical/chemical warning up to the brain. This is effectively an instantaneous process, alerting the conscious mind. For humans, we take this as a warning to get treatment. There's just one problem. Even when we have reported to the nearest emergency room and paid for a doctor to treat us, the pain continues. This is inconvenient. There should be a switch to turn it off. But the pain can persist for weeks, months or, even, years depending on the nature of the injury we pick up. This is leading modern doctors to see pain as being a separate condition worth treating in its own right. In the better hospitals, you will now see pain clinics or departments specializing in pain management. Once you have received the best possible treatment for the underlying cause of the pain, you then see a specialist to get the maximum relief from the pain.

So, to help you understand the best way to treat pain, we start with a few definitions. If the injury, disease or disorder is only going to affect you for a short time, the pain is called acute. As you respond to the treatment for the underlying physical cause, the pain will slowly fade. This is very important psychologically. Once you have confirmation the injury will heal and you will make a complete recovery, you remain optimistic and positive. If a doctor tells you physical therapy will speed up rehabilitation, you will work through the pain to get the results. This is not the case when the pain is chronic. "Chronus" is the Greek word for time. It is not a reference to the severity of the pain, but to the fact you will feel it for months or years. This is demoralizing. Many people are tempted to give up when they recognize there's not going to be a quick "cure". So a major part of the treatment for chronic pain is counseling and support to encourage people to stay more positive and work toward getting the best possible quality of life.

Tramadol is often given in high dosages for a few days to relieve more severe acute pain. This gives the maximum relief and sets you on the road to recovery. But if the pain is chronic, current best practice is not to rely on painkillers unless necessary. Becoming dependent on painkillers is a high price to pay. Cognitive behavioral therapy is better at teaching people how to cope with pain and find a good life within the new physical limitations. Tramadol may still be given if pain flares, but no painkiller should be used on a routine basis.

Changing your lifestyle for treating ED

Many men, especially those who are 40 years old and older, are quite prone to experiencing erectile dysfunction (also referred to as male impotence) of various degrees of severity, and that alone can lead to frustration, stress, depression, anguish and relationship problems.

Because this problem is quite common, there are a lot of prescriptions with erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra reported each year, as most men believe that these drugs are the remedy for their problems.

Still, going to the doctor's office on a regular basis can be frustrating and time consuming, not to mention the fact that not all men will experience significant improvements with such drugs. Moreover, fact is that most erectile dysfunction medications help overcoming the consequence rather than the cause, and provide only temporary benefits that wear off when you stop taking the pills.

However, most men do not realize that there are perfectly natural options for treating erectile dysfunction and they can provide impressive results comparable to those of pharmaceutical solutions.

Fact is that for a large part of men suffering from erectile dysfunction a simple change in lifestyle can be very beneficial. Simple steps like smoking cessation, regular physical activity, lower alcohol intake, weight loss and control of specific health conditions can be just enough to get rid of impotence for a really long time.

Smoking cessation can be a really tough step to make for most long-time smokers. But it's a well established fact that among other things, smoking leads to male impotence, so keep that in mind when trying to quit smoking the next time. Try replacement patches and pills; some people have used acupuncture to stop smoking effectively. Be more willing in your pursuit if you don't want to have sex only after using Cialis.

Regular physical activity is in overall a great thing to follow. Not only it will help you stay fit, it will significantly improve your physical and mental health in general. By providing increased blood circulation, exercising helps keep up the blood vessels in a good condition, which is crucial for maintaining good sexual performance. Working out on a regular basis can bring you the same results as Cialis, not to mention the pleasant side effects of having a strong, fit and sexy body that will definitely be appreciated by your partner.

Next stop, reduce stress. One of the best ways to do this is to get enough sleep and use relaxation techniques such as yoga to get through the frustration and pressure of the day at the office. Try worrying less about your current tasks, as it may lead to accumulation of stress, fatigue and that's a sure way to get erectile dysfunction in a short period of time. Sleeping about 8 hours a day is a must, since a good night's sleep is essential for your overall health. If you're used to deprave yourself from sleep, the probability of developing sexual problems is very high.

By combining all of these efforts you will prevent and even treat erectile dysfunction without the need of using special medications. But it will definitely require some effort, because changing your lifestyle can be really challenging.

The Most Popular Weight-loss Diets

Have you noticed that there are lots of dieters, but even more diets? That's because they are too difficult to stay on and, when you go off, the weight all comes back, plus some. The best diets then are the ones that utilize realistic principles for weight-loss and health! These are things that will serve you well throughout your life. Let's see how the most popular ones stack up.

The Zone Diet

Dr Sears, the creator of the diet, says that the human body functions best when taking in a ratio of 40% of calories from carbohydrates, 30% of calories from protein, and 30% of calories from fats. 40% carbs is a lot less than the average diet, so we can say this is a Low-Carb Diet. The Zone also tries to get you to eat foods lower on the Glycemic Index so that you will store less calories as fat.
Another main point of the diet is to eat lots of meat-this is a potential health problem, so we will address this later.

South Beach Diet

Out with the bad foods and in with the good. Simple carbohydrates and "bad" fats are to be avoided while you eat more complex foods, like whole grains, beans, nuts, and raw vegetables. Eating only complex sugars will allow you to feel at a more even hunger level throughout the day. You can control your intake better!
It also has three phases: an intense weight-loss phase, a gradual one that continues until you are at your ideal weight, and then a maintenance level.
This is not a Low-Carb Diet; rather, it is about controlling your blood-glucose levels.

Skinny Bitch Diet

This is the ultimate principles diet.

  1. No cane sugar or artificial sweeteners (natural sweeteners like beet sugar and brown rice syrup are okay).
  2. Whole grains and brown rice, not white bread, white flour products, and white rice.
  3. Get rid of meat and dairy. [Animal products make the body retain weight and are bad for your health]
  4. Focus on quality, not just quantity (but don't eat 5000 calories a day!)
  5. Zone will make you lose fat, but all that meat isn't healthy. It's a gimmick.
  6. Not just Low-Carb; get complex carbs if you don't want to be hungry all day
  7. Focus on your habits. Skinny Bitch is best for this.

This one sounds hard, but it is just as easy as any other diet. In fact, limit your options by cutting out whole categories of food like sugars and animal products makes it a lot easier to plan a meal. It will leave you by far the healthiest.

A healthy body will also be naturally slimmer and easier to maintain than an unhealthy body. Focusing on appearance is confusing the symptom with the disease. Try to get healthy and fit and the good looks will follow. If you are overweight or obese and you need some help, talk to your doctor about Acomplia. Acomplia will make it easier to control your appetite and diet. When using Acomplia, it is important to follow a diet that will ensure you get all the necessary nutrients as well.

Pills in the movies

Real life does sometimes appear in movies. You only have to think of Jack Nicholson in "Something's Gotta Give" to see an older man relying on a little blue pill to ensure a great performance with a hot young woman. Yes, there are some movies that dare to mention the possibility of erectile dysfunction except most pull their punches one way or the other. Which makes it all the more pleasing to see "Love & Other Drugs" starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway about a sales representative for Pfizer in the 1990's just before the little blue pills are launched. This makes the movie one of the most explicit both in the extent of time our leading couple spend naked on the screen and on new ground being broken in product placement. Based on the non-fiction book by Jamie Reidy called, "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman", this movie makes no secret of our hero's employer nor the name of their new product. In marketing terms, you can't have a better platform from which to sell your product than this. Except this is a rather sickly romantic drama in which our sexually athletic hero beds our soon-to-be-ill heroine and then has to turn himself from a love bunny into a supportive caring guy. Like tiger losing stripes and getting leopard spots, or something. Frankly, unless all you want to watch a Hollywood couple put in a significant amount of time naked, this is not the movie for you.

All of which leads to the vital question: what would make a good movie about erectile dysfunction? Or could there ever be a good movie with erectile dysfunction as its main theme? I suppose we could take "American Pie" as a model. Although it's actually about premature ejaculation, it nevertheless places a sexual problem front and center. Except it's a comedy. A little like "Silence of the Loins" or "A Hard Day's Night" or "Flop Gun". Yes, it's easy to poke fun at the problem in the appropriately named "Everything You Always Wanted to Ask About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask", but more serious movies are difficult to find. Except there's "Bliss" where Craig Sheffer and Sheryl Lee are helped through their sexual problems by Terence Stamp. This is a seriously good movie with everyone listening to and learning from each other to arrive at perfect sex. Or possibly "Lonesome Jim" with Casey Affleck being nursed back to emotional and physical health by Liv Tyler.

Perhaps the real problem is we all feel too embarrassed by the reality of sexual dysfunction, we'd rather not see it on the big screen. It's not entertaining. This leaves those with the problem in real life the simple solution. You don't have to wait for Jake Gyllenhaal to make a home delivery. You just order Viagra online. With generic Viagra selling alongside the branded original, it's your choice whether to pay full price or get the relief you need at a bargain price. In fact, you can solve the problem and still have money left over to go watch a movie.

Causes and symptoms of GERD

Acid reflux is the synonym often used to describe gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), a health condition that is characterized by excessive acid reflux that damages the esophagus. This health problem is known to affect people regardless of their age, but the most vulnerable groups are pregnant women, smokers and people who tend to eat right before bedtime.

The most common symptoms of this condition include heartburn; discomfort in the esophagus; chest pain; cough; hoarseness and problems with swallowing. These symptoms usually take place after a person has consumed a large meal or some alcohol, or after smoking a cigarette.

Acid reflux problems are known to be influenced by problems with the esophagus sphincter. In some cases it can be caused by excessive production of acid in the stomach. Lower amounts of acid produced can also cause GER symptoms because in such a situation the esophageal sphincter won't open and allow food to get into the stomach, causing irritation to the esophagus itself.

Some health conditions can influence the development of GERD: hiatus hernia, zollinger-elison syndrome, hypercalcemia, scleroderma and systemic sclerosis.

Most people tend to believe that acid reflux problems are strongly influenced by alcohol, tea and coffee consumption. And while these substances can really aggravate the problem for people who already have GERD, they alone cannot influence the development of this condition in a healthy person. When comparing risk factors, smoking strongly increases the change of developing this disease when compared to tea, coffee and alcohol. Still, if you already have signs of GERD you should be very cautious when choosing foods and beverages to take. Physicians recommend avoiding alcohol intake and reducing the amounts of tea and coffee that you drink in order to prevent further development of the problem.

Different studies have confirmed that smoking is the major factor causing the development of GERD. Smokers who have more than 20 years of smoking experience have a 70% higher risk of suffering from acid reflux problems as compared to their non-smoking peers. And those who already have acid reflux issues are more likely to use drugs like Nexium after they start smoking.

But smoking is not the only factor that raises the risk of experiencing GERD symptoms. Large amounts of salt consumed on a regular basis where found to be as much of a risk for GERD as smoking. During clinical trials researchers observed that those who consumed large amounts of salt over a long period of time had a 70% higher risk of suffering from acid reflux disease.

A person suffering from GERD can diagnose the disease on their own, because the symptoms are easily observed. If you start experiencing the symptoms of acid reflux disease on a regular basis, it is best to visit your doctor and go through a series of tests to confirm the diagnosis. It's not recommended to start taking drugs such as Nexium for treating GERD before you consult with your doctor and get a prescription. Certain lifestyle changes may also be required to get rid of acid reflux problems, and it is especially important for long time smokers.

As the say, the best way to treat the disease is to prevent it, and GERD is not an exception. By eating less salty food and avoiding nicotine consumption you will lower your chances of experiencing acid reflux problems in the future.

Nexium for your heartburn problems

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is not flu or a headache. It is more serious than that. People call it a scary word GERD. All the adults know that stomach issues are to be treated with the speed of light because they have a tendency to become something worse than they were. Some of us meet the health problem when there is excess acid produced in the stomach. It is also related to gastric ulcer that can transform into different shapes of serious disease. In other words, all sorts of stomach problems are destined to ruin your health state.

It should ring your bell right when your stomach pains become everyday pains. Don't wait until it becomes too late to do something, act today and feel better tomorrow. This should become your motto with stomach pains. But we are only humans and this means we are practically all the same when it comes to treatment and medication. We wait and hope to get better, feeding ourselves with promises that nobody can keep. We have to understand one thing - when we are ill, we can't remove the pain on our own. We need professional help. At least we need to get a consultation or a smart advice that will make us follow it and help ourselves.

If you are done with the pain toleration, then you are probably on the way to see a good doctor. This means the most important step is taken - which is the realization of the seriousness of the whole issue. The rest is a step-by-step path that you need to take in order to find the destination that is called harmony of body and mind. It is not possible when the body is unwell. Therefore we have to try to make the best of what we have today.

Nexium is the heartburn treatment that cures the symptoms of stomach acid malady. What is does is the following - the acid is sent into the canal to the esophagus causing burning sensation. The pill is usually prescribed together with some other pills, preferably antibiotics.

It is important to stay considerate and not decide the amount of drug for yourself. If your doctor suggests you a certain dosage, don't try to misbehave. It won't lead to any good news. The treatment usually takes from 4 to 8 weeks. If the course is over, don't play it by the ear, ask your doctor if you need to continue the treatment. Sometimes it is necessary to stop at the right moment or to take a break. But this is not up to you to decide. The pill is not to be given to kids and teens under 18. Please keep away from children and keep it in a safe closet. If the state of your health is getting worth, please do not hesitate to call your doctor and get further recommendations from him. Maybe you need a smaller dosage or it can also happen that the drug is not suitable for people like you. In the latter case you will be advice an analogy. Nexium is a strong medication that does work.

If you were prescribed Nexium, you can consider yourself lucky in a way. It means you will recover soon and your acid stomach problems will be left behind for a long period of time if not for good.

Tips to stay active

There's one sad and inescapable fact. As we age, sexual performance starts to fail. It's one of the real frustrations of life. You remember how it used to feel and then feel embarrassed by the current state of play. Once we get into our sixties, up to a quarter are at risk of developing erectile dysfunction. We could all just sit back, quietly confident the weekend pill will see us through to seventy, infinity and beyond. But it would be so much better if we could get through life without having to depend on pills. Ignoring the cost - should it really be costing us that much to get laid? - there are a a host of health reasons for acting on the following list of tips. Living longer, more healthy lives is good for us all.

1. Lose weight There's clear evidence linking obesity with erectile dysfunction. It starts with all that cholesterol in your diet which lays down a deposit in your arteries. When your arteries start to harden, the first to feel the effects is the one leading into your penis. Then, when your looks disappear under that excessive weight, you find it harder to get anyone into bed with you.

2. Eat a healthy diet Following on from the first, the less healthy the diet, the greater the risk of diabetes which can damage the nerve endings you rely on to form an erection, and heart disease is just a little farther down the line. Keeping a "normal" blood pressure allows your arteries to expand and contract as they should. If you like evidence, there's a small mountain of it showing men eating a Mediterranean style diet of fruit, vegetables, fish, lean meat and whole grains have better heath and a great sex life.

3. Cut down on the amount of alcohol Heavy drinking can seriously affect your liver function and cause nerve damage. Put both together and you have a classic cause of erectile dysfunction.

4. Quit smoking Quite apart from the fact most women don't want to smell your breath, nicotine increases the risk of heart disease by hardening the arteries, and undermines your health with the risk of cancers.

5. Exercise Sex is a potentially strenuous activity. If you have poor muscle tone and your stamina is weak, you will find sex an effort. But if you increase your general activity level, it improves your mood and gives your body the strength needed to engage in sex. But, of course, if you are older, you should not suddenly start exercising. Take advice from a doctor that it will be safe for you and ask a physical trainer for a program to build you up without risking a stroke or heart attack.

6. Learn relaxation techniques If you are stressed, your blood vessels contract. This prevents an erection. Learning how to relax improves your mood and makes sex more enjoyable.

Put all these together and you can probably go through your sixties without having to rely on Cialis. This is not to deny you drugs should the need become apparent. But think of Cialis as the last option when the healthy lifestyle has failed to keep on delivering enjoyable sex.

Why quit smoking

Two years ago in Washington, the US Court of Appeals decided the major cigarette manufacturing companies were guilty of fraud. This needs a word of explanation. Fraud is one of the hardest things to prove. There has to be clear evidence the accused actually knew what they were doing was wrong. This is not something you guess at. But when the courts looked at the ads trading on slogans like "mild", "light" or "low tar" suggesting these cigarettes were safer than ordinary cigarettes, there was no doubt. The makers knew all cigarettes were equally dangerous and were deliberately lying to the public. Worse, there were backroom conspiracies not to compare different brands and to lie about the risks of passive smoking. There were major dollar penalties imposed. This would be a great result if it had also resulted in orders banning the sale of this dangerous drug. But no matter how clear the medical evidence of the risks of lung and heart diseases and the probable cancers, the US remains a country in which everyone is free to do what they want, even if they kill themselves in the process.

Why should this be of interest to men with erectile dysfunction? Well, the technical answer is that nicotine is a vasoconstrictor. In English, it means your arteries contract every time you have a cigarette. This has nothing to do with whether you are really fit or a couch potato. The drug raises the blood pressure and forces the heart to beat a little harder. One of the first results is to limit the capacity of the penile artery, making it more difficult to form an erection. When you are young, nature takes its course and the body overcomes the difficulty. You get to smoke and have great sex. But the evidence is very clear. The more cigarettes a day you smoke and the longer you smoke them, the more likely it is you will suffer erectile dysfunction. In fact, the penile artery is four times smaller than the major arteries in the chest and lungs. If you are going to show any symptoms of heart disease, this will be the first place it shows. So the bad news is that, every time you consult your doctor about your erectile dysfunction, you will be given a very good reason to quit smoking. It helps your blood vessels dilate normally and restores some sexual activity.

You may know that the erectile dysfunction drugs are also prescribed to treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. This is the severe pain in your chest when your arteries will not dilate properly to let the blood flow normally. Just as in your penis, so Levitra will allow the main arteries in your chest to relax, reduce the blood pressure and allow the heart to beat more slowly. Unfortunately, Levitra does not treat the problem. All it does is give you an extra few months or years of relief. So now the choice is yours. If you are reading this because you have erectile dysfunction, do yourself a favor and quit smoking. Remember all the ads that used to suggest some cigarettes are safer than others are a lie. All cigarettes can kill your sex life and put you six feet under.

Sex is not a factor when it comes to pain

It's been interesting to watch the emergence and then control of feminism. When women first started asking for things like the vote, men slowly gave in but then made sure the changes had little effect - no female candidates to vote for. This manipulation of reality came under real pressure as the 1960's gave way to the 1970's and a new militancy was born. It seemed as though male privilege might actually crack. Well, we need not have worried. It may have taken a few more years than we expected, but the genie is now back in the bottle. Despite laws protecting women from discrimination, they are rarely used. Men continue to dominate in almost every area of activity and, remarkably, the majority of women have stopped publicly complaining. Well, perhaps there are odd moments when some speak out. You only have to think of Larry Summers and his remarks about the failure of women to excel in math, to see the possibility of change. But that possibility is swept away when you look at the recent midterm elections where more vitriol against candidates in general, and women candidates in particular, has been sprayed around without anyone thinking this odd. Think of witches and Halloween costumes to get the point. It seems everything is fair during elections.

When it comes to medicine, however, there are real differences that have a direct effect on the planning of our healthcare services. We are not just talking about the obvious need for separate maternity wards. The statistics of care form the basis of federal government policy-making. It takes years to train doctors and bring them up to a reasonable level of competence. Buying the land and getting zoning clearance for building hospitals and clinics is also a long-term task. Funding must be put in place, and pressure to get the projects through local and state procedures must be maintained. Think about it. There are more births than deaths every year. As people grow old, they use hospital services more often. Where are all the healthcare services going to come from over the next decades?

Perhaps surprisingly, more women than men use healthcare services to report disease or disorder. Ignoring accidents which tend to be men driving into each other, women take up more beds and are prescribed more painkilling medication than men. When it comes to pain, women seem more sensitive. Applying the precautionary principle, they use medical services whenever they believe there's a problem. As a result, they get better preventative treatment and live longer than men. In part, this is cultural. Macho men are expected to ignore pain and get on with life. Consulting a doctor is an admission of failure. So, the majority of new facilities and the focus of training will offer more support to women than men. That's where the "market" is for health services. In this, there's only one area of real equality. Pain relief using a drug like Ultram works equally well in men and women. Brain chemistry is not affected by sex. So, if you are a man in pain, you can buy Ultram online and keep your macho image intact. No one need ever know.

Attack with needles

The US box office is currently under assault from Saw 3D - presumably the last in the series. There's something vaguely disturbing about the idea of not only being able to watch people perform surgery on themselves, but also to see them do it in 3D with body parts flying out of the screen at you. In this, there's a big irony because Saw is getting all the headlines while, lurking away in the art houses, you also have 127 Hours which is a true story. You can watch a mountain climber who, when he got trapped in an isolated canyon, cut off his arm to escape.

We tell you this, not to promote self-treatment, but to introduce the idea of acupuncture. Here specialists take a set of long needles and then drive them into your skin. Unfortunately, those of you who like horror movies will be disappointed at the outcome. Instead of rivers of blood erupting from gaping wounds like the oil from a gusher, nothing appears to happen. The victims lie calmly watching the needles go in, all the while chatting about the latest fashions or the current World Series with the expert. It's all very disappointing except, if you talk to any of the millions of people in China or South East Asia where acupuncture is a routine part of medicine, they all report excellent results from the treatment.

Indeed, in China, acupuncture is used alongside conventional anesthetic. Patients going through surgery remain conscious and discuss the finer points of the surgeon's technique with the theater nurses. To those of us in the West, this is taking things too far. The very idea of it really does seem like the plot from a horror movie. So we are not asking you to believe in anything so extreme. Rather we come down a few notches in ambition and report the latest results of a clinical trial in Seattle. A team of dedicated scientists gathered a group of 650 people, all of whom had serious lower back pain with loss of mobility. They were divided into four groups. One received genuine acupuncture from an expert. The second was pricked by toothpicks in all the right places. The third was pricked with needles at random (faintly disconcerting). While the final group was given conventional physical therapy.

In follow-up interviews over the next twelve months, the participants were asked about the level of pain and whether there were any improvements in mobility. Less than half those receiving physical therapy reported any significant change in their condition. But 60% of those receiving the "acupuncture" treatments reported significant and lasting improvements. So the results show a very strong placebo effect for both real and simulated acupuncture. The participants were prepared to believe they were going to find relief, and that's what they got. This strongly suggests the mind is a key player when it comes to lower back pain and, if people believe in the treatment, they get up to twelve months of benefit. For those who cannot believe, there's always Ultram which offers the mind relief through chemistry. It works. Your choice: needles or Ultram? No contest!

New evidence supporting acupuncture

For centuries, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been using acupuncture to treat a wide range of different diseases and disorders. Put most simply, millions of people accept treatment based on sticking needles into their bodies. This sounds a strange thing to do. Western doctors have been consistently skeptical yet, when you actually look at the theory behind it, there is a remarkable similarity in approach. TCM relies on mapping the human body to identify the critical points for manipulation. These points are essentially the same as the major groupings of nerves recognized as significant in the West. Pain-blocking injections are made into TCM acupuncture points. With reluctance, Western researchers are looking more closely for evidence whether acupuncture is effective. Reluctance because the major drug manufacturers discourage research that might put them out of business. Recently, a clinical trial in Seattle was written up in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Some 650 people suffering back pain were divided into four groups. One received genuine acupuncture, the second a modified version of acupuncture pricking the skin in the right places with wooden toothpicks. The third group were pricked with needles at random. The fourth received conventional physical therapy.

All the participants were given ten sessions over a seven-week period. There were follow-up interview spread over the next year to establish whether there was any lasting effect from any of the treatments. Interestingly, 60% of those receiving the different versions of acupuncture were still reporting benefits at the end of the year. Only 40% of those receiving physical therapy reported any continuing improvement. At one level, this would suggest there is a strong placebo effect from the use of acupuncture, i.e. those who receive the treatment believe it will be effective and so it proves to be. In scientific terms, there's nothing wrong with this outcome. When 60% of participants report a better quality of life twelve months after the treatment ended, this is strong evidence of the effectiveness of the treatment. Physical therapy is also based on social contact with one human selling the effectiveness to another yet this got a smaller placebo effect.

It's notoriously difficult to diagnose the cause of back pain. This suggests doctors should be very open-minded when looking for possible treatments. When the mind and body are so closely involved, engaging the mind with acupuncture, no matter whether real or simulated, seems more effective than conventional Western therapy. This is not to deny the role of a painkiller like Tramadol. When the pain grows more serious and mobility is affected, everyone will benefit from taking the drug. But this resort to a drug should be seen as part of a general strategy to encourage mobility. If this is your back, you can take the Tramadol for a short period of time. This should get you through the program of physical exercise, stretching, and hot and cold therapies designed to reduce any swelling and develop better muscle tone to support painless movement. If your problem of back pain is persistent, you should talk to your doctor about acupuncture and some of the alternative therapies. You may find more relief from these treatments than you expect.

Can you live with your baldness?

In the days when people still had fireplaces and, more importantly, actually lit fires to keep warm, there were always stories of folk sitting in front of the television watching the news. A talking head would calmly announce price increases from leading cigarette manufacturers. Deeply angered smokers would pitch their packs into the fire, muttering, "Nevermore," or something equally decisive in raven-speak. For those in the ranks of the Quit Now, these stories were always good PR. Throwing the unsmoked cigarettes into the fire is a kind of poetic justice for the death sticks. But not everyone can be so decisive. Look at the number of people whose New Year Resolutions are forgotten until the next year when they are all solemnly repeated. How many of us have lost all those pounds in weight? All those good intentions defeated by the hard cold reality of the will power needed to make them work.

Worse, it can all come down to whether you know what the right decision is. Although everyone "knows" it"s the right thing to quit smoking and lose weight, there are a hundred-and-one lifestyle choices where not everything is so clear. For example, did you know progressive lenses are bad for your neck. If you work on computers, you end up looking at the screen through one small part of the lens and this static pose compresses the joints in your neck. What about never using a vacuum cleaner? That"s something always popular with men who, for the most part, never really get the need to keep everything so absolutely clean. Did you know that bending over slightly to use either the upright or canister varieties is the position most likely to damage a disc in your back? So when you are tempted to twist and turn and prod the hose under the sofa, stop before you damage yourself.

But here comes the big question. Could you learn to live with baldness? Think Bruce Willis or Michael Jordan, Patrick Stewart or Samuel L. Jackson. They have no problems with low self-esteem. They are confident. Even the women can get in on the act and look pretty cool. Do you remember Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta or Demi Moore in G.I. Jane? In one moment, you could see how tough and sexy women can look without all that hair getting in the way.

Back to our big question. If you found the pattern of hair loss starting to show, could you throw your baseball cap in the fire and make a New Year Resolution to shave off what"s left and so avoid going through the slow-loss process? If not, Propecia is for you. This is the FDA-approved way of keeping your hair healthy. Indeed, take it early enough, and lost hair will grow back. So this is the big decision. This is not a one-time thing. Once you start, you have to keep the Propecia going. The hair loss resumes when you stop. When will you take the decision to be comfortable with yourself?

Xanax and overcoming the fear of public speaking

Social anxiety comes in many different forms with a wide range of different trigger situations which provoke the anxiety or panic attack. But one of the more common problems is the need to speak in public. Whether in the office or some other place where "others" will listen to you speak, this provokes anything from slight nervousness to paralyzing fear. Some will experience insomnia in the build-up to the "big day", others will physically shake, their brow will break out into sweat, and their voices will tremble. It's a sad sight to behold. Although medication can and does help, it's far better to try overcoming the problem yourself. Let's start with the obvious. Never refuse the chance to do it. The more you give into the temptation to avoid speaking, the worse your fear is going to get. This is something you have to face and overcome. That said, you don't have to book the largest local venue and invite hundreds to listen to you. This is something you solve with slow and deliberate steps, aiming to plant the first seeds of confidence and then encourage them into life.

Whatever it is you are to speak on, you have to know and understand the content. People tend to go off topic when they are uncertain of which points are genuinely important. The more you reduce the chances for error, the better your performance is likely to be. So get organized. Plan exactly what you want to say. If you are proposing to use Powerpoint or something similar, get the slides prepared early and practice with them. The more you rehearse, the less nervous you will be. Yes, it's a bit of a clich?. But practicing the whole really does make the delivery perfect. But don't just stand in front of a mirror in your bedroom. Get some friends to come and listen. Trust them to offer constructive comments. Learn from their reactions. If you have to stand without the benefit of anything convenient on which to put notes, there's nothing wrong with holding a set of cards in one hand. Even top professional do it to ensure they don't miss out anything important.

Now comes the biggest challenge. No matter how well you know your material. No matter how well rehearsed you are. You will never do well unless you relax. It's at this point people are tempted to reach for the Xanax. You must resist. There are some simple deep breathing exercises to clear your head and relax tension in the muscles. Some benefit from visualization exercises where they mentally walk through the presentation, staying calm and emerging successful. If you trust in yourself and are prepared to recognize when you have been successful, there's no reason why you should not overcome your fears without having to rely on Xanax. There are nonprofit groups in most cities to help you. Doctors can refer you to counselors. Remember, nervousness is natural. With just a little courage and a positive attitude, you can become a good public speaker.
